Trust our rage; fandom is powerful.

icybluepenguin:

Having thought about the Jaguar thing at the grocery store, here’s the thing.

I feel stupid.  I feel ridiculous for getting excited.  I feel like I should have known better, I should have seen through it.  I feel so stupid for the excited things I posted this morning.

Because now you all will think I’m a fucking idiot.  For getting excited.  For playing into it.  For not seeing through it.  For being gullible.

That’s why we as fans are so outraged, darling. Our enthusiasm for anything concerning our adored Tom was exploited by this corporation for their commercial and media gain. It was calculated. And that’s not how a corporation should treat the celebrities they hire and those celebrities’ fan bases.

Their job is advertise and sell cars. So they hire actors like Tom to appear in their ads and design an ad campaign that will generate a lot of buzz and get their brand out there. When they go out of the way to tease an ad to the actor’s fan base with his name to generate more publicity–a very targeted effort specifically aimed at the fans–and then have not a single part of that ad have him in it–well, the result is some of us feeling exactly as you expressed above. And that’s not right. We should NEVER feel bad for being fans, ever. We’re not guilty for wanting every little moment we can get from our star; we’re not gullible or stupid. But we have been exploited, Tom has been exploited, and that’s not acceptable.

As fans, darling, we understand and don’t think any less of you. What angers me is that this has caused you to feel that about yourself, and that’s not what fandom should ever be. I’m certain that someone like Tom would never want one of his fans to feel that way because of something he’s associated with, and why we need to call this kind of exploitation out when it happens. Fandom is powerful, darling; one of the things I was happy about was knowing that we were all online together, excited about this, and that we’ll have other, more positive chances again…and that we can support each other and have a real impact on fandom in general when things like this happen.
