The 13 Most Common Errors on a Novel’s First Page

  • Over-explanation. This includes prologues. “Prologues are never needed. You can usually throw them in the garbage. They’re usually put on as a patch.”
  • Too much data. “You’re trying to seduce your reader, not burden them,” Friedman said.
  • Over-writing, or “trying too hard.” “We think the more description we add, the more vivid it will be; but we don’t want to be distracted from the story” we open the book for.
  • Beginning the novel with an interior monologue or reflection. Usually this is written as the thoughts of a character who is sitting alone, musing and thinking back on a story. Just start with the story.
  • Beginning the novel with a flashback. Friedman isn’t entirely anti-flashback, but the novel’s opening page is the wrong place for one.
  • Beginning a novel with the “waking up sequence” of a character waking, getting out of bed, putting on slippers, heading for the kitchen and coffee…a cliche
  • Related cliche: beginning the novel with an alarm clock or a ringing phone
  • Starting out with an “ordinary day’s routine” for the main character
  • Beginning with “crisis moments” that aren’t unique: “When the doctor said ‘malignant,’ my life changed forever…” or “The day my father left us I was seven years old…”
  • Don’t start with a dialogue that doesn’t have any context. Building characterization through dialogue is okay anywhere else but there.
  • Starting with backstory, or “going back, then going forward.”
  • Info dump. More formally called “exposition.”
  • Character dump, which is four or more characters on the first page.

Oooh!  I really like that this chart gives (average) percentage of genetic similarity.

And confession: Despite my genealogy hobby, I can never remember what my cousins’ children are called in relation to me.  (First cousin once removed, apparently.) 

Protip: the 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc when referring to cousins refers to how many generations back you have to go to find a common grandparent. First cousins share a grandparent, second cousins share a great-grandparent, etc.

If you do NOT share a grandparent with the relative (for example, your grandparent is their great-grandparent) then there’s a remove involved.

About 2% of the world has Green eyes. 

Amber is a bit more rare, having a yellow-gold tint, with copper/russet undertones. (Sunlight through a glass of whiskey, you know who I’m talking about) (Actually, he has Hazel eyes, but occasionally gets terrific lighting that makes it look amber) Light brown eyes are often mistaken for Amber, but there is a difference – The yellow and orange is far more distinct in Amber eyes.

Violet/Purple eyes are the third rarest. Having Occular Albinism is far more common than full Albinism.

It actually results in super pale blue eyes, but the red blood in their iris will often show through, resulting in a pale purple tone. 

It comes with a host of eye-related disorders and sensitivities. (Mostly because there is no pigmentation in the iris, therefore your pupil dilating or shrinking has very little effect on how much light actually enters the eye – Eye damage occurs very easily, and the optic nerve has a harder time developing)

Black eyes are second-most rare, occurring from a Super-melanistic genetic trait similar to Albinism, but on the opposite scale. Many people say that true black eyes do not exist. They argue that black eye color is rather very dark brown color, so dark that it appears black.

Full Albinism resulting in red eyes is the most rare. 

Just curious, what about grey eyes? Because one of my friends has grey eyes and I’m not kidding in the slightest.

Gray eyes are the same as blue, genetically speaking.

One theory is that in gray eyes, there are larger deposits of collagen in the stroma, resulting in Mie scattering rather than Rayleigh scattering (which is basically the difference between seeing a blue sky and a gray sky, for an analogy).

The other explanation is that there might be different concentrations of melanin at the front of the stroma.
